*Update: Go check out our complete guide for Book Week 2024 ideas!
With Book Week 2022 and the cold winds of winter upon us.. we’re slowing down and reminiscing on those childhood books that we would curl up and read when we were young. On the top of my list is the well-loved and known Roald Dahl. Bringing us titles like The BFG, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda we have a feeling everyone might have a favourite book on this list!
Whether you fell in love with The Witches, or could recite every line of Charlie and the Chocolate factory.. there truly is a story for every child in this list! Let’s take a look at some of the best Roald Dahl stories, and the best character costumes you can wear for book week 2022 and the Dreaming with Eyes Open theme!
Matilda Costumes
Clever, magical and she’s had enough! Matilda shows us what happens when you mess with the wrong girl! This story shows us from a child’s perspective, how hope and a little love can save anyone!
The BFG Costumes
This well-loved classic story follows orphan Sophie as she is whisked away to dream world by The Big Friendly Giant. He lives surrounded by nine other fearsome giants who spend every night munching down humans. Or, as the giants call them, human beans. She joins him in his giant world, and the two hatch a plan to get the Queen’s help to save the world from giants! Those ears are a must for this costume!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Costumes
We all know it. Poor boy wins golden ticket, old man can suddenly walk, Willy Wonka does his Willy Wonka thing, Oompa Loompas.. you know how it goes! Some of the best characters come from this family classic! With some of the strangest scenes, there’s a million good ideas for dress ups in this story!
The Witches Costumes
If the grand high witch taking her face off didn’t traumatize you as a child.. were you even a Roald Dahl fan!? I read this book back to back and back again, with the movie playing in the background! Never getting tired of the excitement and fear I had of ladies who wore gloves! This is one costume you can take to the next level!
Fantastic Mr Fox Costumes
A logic-based fox, running on animal instinct to save his peculiar little family and friends. A rowdy group of farmers.. how could this go wrong? I loved this one even as I got older!
George's Marvellous Medicine Costumes
Revenge is best served in a big pot full of strange ingredients! Especially if your grandma is a bug eating witch lady! George might’ve been your idol if you liked to make magic potions in the kitchen as a youngin’!
James and the Giant Peach Costumes
A book for those kids who needed an escape from home life, poor James is kept miserable y his two terrible aunts until he find a magic giant peach, which he uses to escape to the sea!
The Twits Costumes
Two hideous idiots, a spiteful marriage and a couple of monkeys! It doesn’t take much to turn the Twits upside down! Team Twits or Team Roly-Poly Birds?
The Enormous Crocodile Costumes
Six mischievous animals, all working on the same goal. Unmask the enormous crocodile! We see The Enormous Crocodile, Not-So-Big-One, Humpy-Rumpy, Trunky, Muggle Wump, Roly-Poly and Toto and Mary all work together to foil the beast’s plans!
