The Children’s Book Council of Australia has officially announced that this year the theme for Book Week will be…
Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds
What a theme! Book Week this year will be like no other, it’ll be like jumping in a time machine and travelling through the past, present and future! Now we know with a theme such as this one it's easy to be overwhelmed with such a vast range of kids Book Week costumes and teachers Book Week costumes to choose from! That’s exactly why we have devised a plan to make your selection process easy! We’re going to break the theme into 3 parts and highlight some of our top picks. But remember that all the sections are interchangeable and no one idea fits into just one box. Once we’re done, you’ll have so many ideas that you’ll be ready to tackle the special event head on!
So where do we start? How about the beginning of time?
Let’s take a trip through the ages! We’re going back to times that we can only read about in the history books. Let’s begin our journey in the Mesozoic and into the Prehistoric times, think of dinosaurs and cavemen. Where to next? It has to be Ancient Times, an era where Egypt, Rome, Greece, pharaohs, gladiators, gods and goddesses reigned supreme and where names such as Cleopatra, Marc Antony and Julius Caesar stand out. Next up is Medieval and Middle Ages kings, queens, knights, Vikings and even dragons fall into this section. Have you picked a costume yet? It’s ok if you haven’t, we’ve still got a way to go! Next to the chopping block is the Renaissance era. Names such as Leonardo da Vinci and William Shakespeare stand out during this time period and of course pirates were also prominent during this era. We can’t forget early Modern Times. This era covers the the 1700's to 1800's, think Colonial, Victorian and the Old West. Now we’re ready to venture into the 19th century, that’s right, Modern Times! The 1920s or the Roaring Twenties, as it’s fondly remembered, where gangsters and flappers take centre stage. What about the 1930s and 1940s? A time that covers the Great Depression and World War II. Or the 1950s where rock ’n’ roll was king, and the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley were on top. Also, an era that influenced the movie Grease and was responsible for the super nerd, poodle skirts and the famous 50s housewife! We can’t leave out the grooviest time of them all, the 1960s and 1970s! Hippies and disco were the themes for this era with names such as The Beatles, Elton John, David Bowie and Abba coming to mind. We’re almost done with Old Worlds. Have you had enough yet? We’re jumping on a time warp and going to the 1980s. Shell suits were popular, big hair was in, the makeup was super bright and Madonna, Prince, Guns n Roses, ACDC and the King of Pop Michael Jackson owned the airwaves! Who’s ready for Old Worlds to finish? Let’s wrap up with the 1990s? MC Hammer, Clueless and the ever popular Hip Hop scene all began in the 90s making it a decade to remember!
We’ve made it to the middle of the road!
When we think of new worlds, our mind immediately goes to anything that’s futuristic and space themed! Our stand out picks are anything robotic, cyberpunk style and of course alien costumes... for obvious reasons! But there are many other things that can fit in this category, what about a crazy mad scientist like Doc from Back to the Future? Or the Steampunk movement, that incorporates Victorian style with steam powered technological advancements? You could also consider the planets being explored in the solar system as new worlds, making astronaut costumes a great idea! Speaking of space exploration, we can’t forget to add Star Trek as a new world option. Depending on what you think is going to happen in the future there’s a good chance that our new world could end in a zombie apocalypse, making a biohazard zombie stand out amongst the crowd. We’re almost done and the big question on our mind is, have you picked your costume yet? We’ve saved the best for last so don’t worry if your still undecided!
The end is in sight, but we’ve still got a little way to go.
This category is definitely going to be the largest, why you ask? Because all the good stuff is from other worlds, that’s why! Everything magical, evil, heroic and out of this world is right here waiting to be discovered. To start we’re taking a trip through all the wonderful worlds that contain only the most magical of creatures... everything from mermaids to unicorns, wizards and fairies.. and even dragons and monsters! We’ve got the Avengers (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye). The Marvel villains (Thanos, Ultron and Taskmaster). Marvels extras, The Guardians of the Galaxy (Rocket Racoon, Grut, Gamora, Nebula and Star Lord). Spiderman, Gwen Stacey, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Deadpool and Ant-Man. Join us in DC land, starting with the greatest hero of them all, the man who protects Gotham City, Batman. We can’t forget his sidekicks and foes either (Robin, The Joker, Two Face, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, The Riddler and Poison Ivy). From Gotham to Krypton we have to give Superman an honourable mention along with Wonder Woman! Now for everyone’s favourite, we’re going all the way to Platform 9 3/4 and catching the Hogwarts Express to the Wizarding World! That’s right we’re going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with Harry Potter! What house will the sorting hat put you in? Gryffindor? Hufflepuff? Ravenclaw? Or Slytherin? Will you become a teacher like Professor McGonagall? Or Dumbledore? Or will you turn to the Death Eaters and worship Lord Voldemort? We can’t wait to see what you decide!
We’re pretty much done, but we can’t finish up without adding some honourable mentions for costume ideas, these are our classic Book Week costumes. Costumes that come directly from the authors of books we’ve all read. They are Roald Dahl (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda) and David Williams (Gangsta Granny, Awful Auntie, Boy in the Dress and Grandpas Great Escape). You’ve also got Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat along with Thing One and Thing Two. Last but certainly not least we can’t forget the Horrible Histories and Where’s Wally books!
